LEKI MAKALU FX CARBON Trekking Poles review

A current folding, adjustable pair with two plans: compact SKU 65620622C spans 100–120 cm; standard SKU 65620621S spans 110–130 cm. Both list a 41 cm packed length, Aergon Air foam grips, carbon upper and lower shafts, ELD folding joints and Speed Lock 2 Plus levers.

A useful fit for

A source-supported choice when an adjustable folding pole, external lever, documented EVA foam and carbon upper/lower shafts matter, and one of the exact 100–120 or 110–130 cm plans fits.

The main tradeoff

The compact and standard SKUs differ in reach, grip size, section count and listed per-pole mass. Snow-basket inclusion and an integrated shock system are not documented in the inspected current product listing.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Which SKU reaches 130 cm?

Only the standard 65620621S plan is listed through 130 cm, with a 110–130 cm range. The compact 65620622C plan stops at 120 cm, even though the two ranges overlap from 110 to 120 cm.

Is the compact grip made of cork?

The page describes Aergon Air as EVA foam and calls the compact size a small-hand grip. Its cork-optic styling does not establish natural cork as the contact material.

Does it include a snow basket or DSS?

The specifications list a Trekking basket and Flex Tip; Snowflake Basket is shown separately as an accessory. The inspected product page does not document an integrated DSS system or confirm a supplied snow basket, so verify the package if either condition is essential.

The MAKALU FX CARBON is a current folding trekking pole with an external length-adjustment lever, but it is not a fixed-length carbon Z pole. LEKI’s U.S. listing describes two size configurations, each adjustable after deployment. The family’s short pack size is attractive for storage; its real advantage is the ability to fold for carrying while still adjusting the working length within the selected range.

Compact and standard are separate plans

LEKI’s product feed ties compact SKU 65620622C, in a natural-carbon and grey-green-white colorway, to a 100–120 cm range. Standard SKU 65620621S, natural-carbon and malachite-green-black, covers 110–130 cm. The page lists a 41 cm pack size for the family, weights of 241 g per pole for compact and 252 g for standard, and four versus five sections. The shared packed-length value should not obscure the different upper limits and grip-size labels. If you need a 125 or 130 cm setting, the standard plan is the one that reaches it; the compact option stops at 120 cm.

Both versions use LEKI’s ELD folding system and Speed Lock 2 Plus lever. ELD releases the folding sections, while the external lever handles in-use length adjustment. The shaft is listed as PRC 1000 carbon in both upper and lower parts. Aergon Air foam grips are documented, with the compact version described as a smaller grip for smaller hands. The listing calls out the compact grip’s “cork optic” appearance; that phrase refers to its look, not a documented cork grip. For material filtering, the manufacturer’s Aergon Air description identifies EVA foam.

What is not in the AS version

Do not confuse this model with the Makalu FX Carbon AS. That closely named variant adds a Dynamic Suspension System at the tip, identifies a carbon upper and aluminum lower shaft, and instructs users to use DSS tips with baskets. The non-AS Makalu FX Carbon has no such system documented in its inspected U.S. product table. That is not proof that it can never be paired with a dampening accessory, but the source does not support treating the reviewed package as shock-absorbing.

The Makalu Pro FX Carbon is another distinct option. It uses an Aergon Air Cork grip, has one standard 110–130 cm SKU and a listed 41 cm pack size. If natural cork contact is the priority, the Pro’s source description is clearer than the non-AS FX Carbon’s compact “cork optic” wording. If you want shock absorption, compare the AS edition rather than inferring it from the shared Makalu FX name.

Basket and package evidence

The official specifications list a trekking basket and carbide Flex Tip. They do not say that a Snowflake Basket is included. The page places Snowflake Basket in a “Buy It With” accessory section, which is a separate-purchase prompt rather than a package confirmation. Treat snow-basket inclusion as unresolved until the seller confirms the exact SKU contents. Likewise, the page states that the unit is a pair, but a retailer’s listing should still be checked for the precise SKU and all listed parts.

LEKI presents the pole as a carbon, adjustable, folding design for hiking and backpacking. The 241/252 g per-pole values are manufacturer specifications, not independent weigh-ins. They can help you compare listed variants, but the standard pole is not automatically a better fit just because its range is longer. The 110–130 cm plan has a different grip size and an extra section; choose it only if that reach and handle are right for your body and technique.

Who should shortlist it

This model makes sense on paper for someone who wants EVA foam, an adjustable external lever, carbon sections and a folding package, with no requirement for a documented integrated shock mechanism. The 100–120 cm compact and 110–130 cm standard plans both list 41 cm pack size, but a pole’s own dimension is not a claim about airline carry-on acceptance or the fit of a loaded pack. Measure your target working length and available storage before buying.

For an exact offer, match the SKU suffix to the range and color rather than relying on a generic product name. Check the current setup instructions, adjust both shafts to a safe position, and inspect the lock before use. The manufacturer specifications do not establish durability under a particular load, feel on wet rock, or whether the foam grip suits an individual hand. This is a source-based assessment of a current U.S. product, not a report of testing, ownership or customer experience.
