Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Poles (100–140 cm) review

Three-section adjustable poles with FlickLock adjustment, extended dual-density grips, extra snow baskets and a 61.5 cm listed collapsed length; the manufacturer page has conflicting weight and grip-material labels.

A useful fit for

A candidate for a hiker seeking telescoping adjustment over a 100–140 cm range, a shorter stated collapse length than the Trail and Trail Cork, an extended grip, and snow baskets specifically described as extra-included. The grip material remains unclassified because manufacturer page labels conflict.

The main tradeoff

The official product page lists weights of both 560 g and 534 g without resolving the difference or weight basis. The same page's EVA feature copy conflicts with a 100% TPR grip material listing; shoppers who require a known grip material should not treat this as confirmed. The 61.5 cm collapsed length is still too long for some compact packs.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What is the usable length range?

Black Diamond lists 100–140 cm and describes a three-section pole. Confirm your actual pole setting falls within that range; the numbers do not replace an on-trail fit check.

Are snow baskets included?

The page says replaceable baskets and specifically says extra snow baskets come with the poles. Verify the exact package and installed basket details on the seller offer; a compatible spare part is not the same as included equipment.

What material are the grips?

The product features call them EVA foam, while the materials list labels both grip top and grip as 100% TPR. The evidence does not resolve that conflict, so this assessment does not match the model to an essential EVA, cork or rubber material choice.

How long is it when collapsed?

The manufacturer lists 61.5 cm. If your pack limit is shorter, do not infer that these fit; compare the actual pole length with your opening and storage needs.

This assessment uses Black Diamond's US product page, color/SKU feed, trekking-pole instructions and current warranty information. It is not a field test: I have not handled or used the Trail Back. The reviewed Trail Back is the 100–140 cm three-section configuration. The manufacturer's feed lists two color-only SKUs: Creek Blue (BD1125524064ALL1) and Burnt Sienna (BD1125526044ALL1).

A familiar adjustable layout with a shorter stated collapse

The Trail Back is a three-section telescoping pole with named FlickLock adjustment. Black Diamond lists a usable range of 100–140 cm and a collapsed length of 61.5 cm. Those measurements make the model easy to compare with other telescoping designs, but they do not indicate whether its grip and length will fit an individual hiker. Measure a useful pole position with the footwear and load you expect to carry, and leave room to adjust for grade and technique. For storage, compare the stated 61.5 cm to the bag opening or luggage bay you actually use; it is shorter than the 64.6 cm Trail and 64.8 cm Trail Cork listings reviewed here, but it is not a short-folding pole. FlickLock is Black Diamond's external lever system. The manufacturer instructions describe setting the shaft length, closing the lever and adjusting the clamp tension if a lower section slips. That makes lock inspection an important ownership step rather than an optional feature detail. The product page describes a packable, three-section design and replaceable baskets, but does not specify a numeric lock count in the text reviewed. I have not inferred one from appearance or section count.

Grip design—and a material label that does not resolve

Black Diamond's feature copy calls the Trail Back grip EVA foam and highlights dual-density extended surfaces for changing hand positions. The materials list on the same product page says “[Grip Top] 100% TPR” and “[Grip] 100% TPR.” That is a real evidence conflict, not a detail to smooth over: this assessment does not classify the main grip as EVA, cork or rubber for a required-material match. If material is an essential buying constraint, ask the maker or seller to identify the exact current grip before deciding. The extension itself is described in the feature copy, and the page lists an adjustable webbing strap, but neither establishes individual comfort or suitability for a particular hand.

Snow baskets and package checks

The product page says baskets are replaceable and that extra snow baskets come with the poles. This supports a snow-basket-included requirement, but its wording does not explicitly identify the installed basket type as a package item. Verify the color/SKU and seller package before ordering, especially if you need a particular basket arrangement. The materials table lists the flex tip as nylon and the separate tip as carbide and steel; check replacement-part compatibility for the exact model rather than assuming every similarly named tip fits. The reviewed page does not establish a shock-absorption mechanism or a confirmed box count, so buyers with either requirement should seek explicit confirmation rather than relying on the product image.

Weight and material disclosures need care

The Trail Back product details present two weight entries: 560 g and 534 g. They appear on the same page without an explanation of why they differ, and neither line says whether the value refers to one pole or a pair. I therefore do not use a single listed weight in the comparison data. Do not rank this model as lighter or heavier than a competitor until the manufacturer or seller confirms a like-for-like basis. The shaft is listed as 7075 aluminum, with 30% pre-consumer recycled aluminum described as UL-validated and a minimum 14% recycled content by total finished weight. Those are specific manufacturer material claims, not a broader environmental-impact comparison. The listed origin is China. The product page also says the poles contain PFAS and cannot be shipped to California, New York or Colorado; check the live page and current seller terms for your destination.

Inspection, service and limitations

Black Diamond's trekking-pole instructions advise checking the poles before and after use for deformation or damage and confirming that the locks hold. They caution against applying oil or silicone to the shafts because that can cause slipping; follow the manual's narrower instruction for a stiff lever pin rather than lubricating a sliding joint. After wet use, dry sections before storage. The currently posted North American warranty lists a two-year period for trekking and ski poles, subject to its written conditions, seller eligibility and proof-of-purchase rules. The manufacturer's current US recall page was checked on the research date and did not list trekking poles; that absence is not a promise about future notices.

Who may want to compare it

Keep the Trail Back on a shortlist if a 100–140 cm telescoping range works, 61.5 cm is short enough for your pack, and you want FlickLock adjustment with extra snow baskets documented in the package. Its unresolved weight and grip labels are meaningful reasons to pause—not minor omissions—if either is central to your choice. Compare the Trail Cork when a verified natural cork grip matters, or the Trail when EVA foam is expressly documented. Before purchase, confirm exact SKU/color, package count, basket arrangement, the grip material and the correct weight figure with the seller, as well as regional shipping and return conditions. No price, stock or customer-performance claim is made here.
